We've only just begun!

Design for the new building. We will have a meeting on January 15th here in Elkhorn for all who are interested in praying and planning with us! The morning will be for Pro Sanctity members and board members, a time of prayer and planning, and the afternoon 1:00 -2:30 pm will presentation and prayer on the building plans. Let us know if you can make all or part of the day, or are interested but cannot come!
402-289-2670 or psm@prosanctity.org
May God bless our Eagle Scouts!
Thanks to the Edward's Family: Ron, Andrew, John, Terri...and many other boy scout helpers!
The bridge is in! Still some work to do!
We have need of 14 wooden stations of the cross if anyone is interested in a future project. The places to post them are already set, but the crosses were burned in the fire!

On the Wish List:
Snow Blower - Grasshopper brand has a snow blower/mower that would be perfect for us! Call or write Teresa

November/December 2010

The work has begun! Chuck Lacey and Ken Sorenson, builder and designer respectively, have been meeting every week this past month checking soils, making designs, and planning for the foundation of the new and improved "Beloved Barn" to be laid. Believe it or not, just before the snow fell the ground was dug, cleared of old dirt, and new healthy dirt placed into it...tons of it! Extra was needed to raise the future building a little higher than the previous one, so there would be no danger of water seeping into it!
We often told the camp children and confirmation students that Jesus was born in a barn and that He must also be born in us too! We pray that our new facility will be a healthy and holy place for everyone to come to know the Christ who was born in a barn for us, and make room for Him in our own hearts!

It is amazing that this past year we started the "Green Team", men and women who wanted to share their talents with the Pro Sanctity Retreat Center. Members meet every first Saturday, pray, plan, and then keep up with the monthly "to do" list throughout the month. The list usually consisted of mowing, fixing small breaks or machines, and maybe hammering a nail here or there. Who knew they would be building a small storage unit that was akin to building a house!! Praise God! They did it!!
Greg Swinarski recently contributed a sparkling angel on the grounds, and it expresses our feelings perfectly: Glory to God for all the good that has happened to us even with the burning down of the barn! Praise God!
Blessings on our Green Team during this Holy Christmas time!
Teresa, Leela, Anne and all the Apostolic Oblates and Pro Sanctity members

Green Team and Angel Helpers: December Help?

December 1, 2010

Hi Everyone!

Thanks to all for all the small, hidden, large, noticeable, and everything in between, acts of service and kindness of this past month!! God bless you all!!! Special thanks to Jeff for the new GREAT ROOM – painted walls, exquisite newly refinished floor and even the cat is happy with her new “cat barn” – well most of the time she is happy! Thank you from all of us!!

1. Green Team Meeting December 4, 2010 - 9:30 am - Retreat Center! Everyone is welcome and if you cannot come, send your ideas for to do list and responses.

2. Boy Scouts with our good friend, Deacon Paul T. will be gathering for their training December 10-12, 2010 and will do service on Saturday, December 11 or when weather will allow, see below. They would like "our list" of to do's... They will be in the cabin.

3. Tonight we will send a revised plan of the new building!! We have the winter to work on details, but if we can settle on basic size and where windows and such will be we can put in the footings and then be ready for building in the spring!

4. We have had several offers for washer and dryer, the last one was from the Dyer family who want us to go and get the set we want – new, and then when we have the new building to buy another set! We do not have a place to put a new set in the old house as of yet! What shall we do? Use the kitchen bathroom???

5. Any ideas for storage of an industrial kitchen set?? We need a garage or a walk in basement probably.

6. Continue on purging the library. We are keeping only “our specialty saint, theology and bible books, emphasis on saints and Mary” and in need of items for children, DVD’s etc.

7. Clean and paint the upper room of the house.

8. Electricity in the new shed.

Is December 10 through December 12 morning available?

Hopefully the wind will be down to burn that pile outside.

As far as cooking, we can bring our propane camp stove.  We just have to be extra clean where we are eating.  I offered the older scouts a change to camp in their tents outside of the building. In the past I've had some adventurous scouts!

I have one scout, Matt Beresh that would like to do his Eagle project at Pro Sanctity.  I told him to ask when we're out there next.

Let me know what's on your list that we can help with?

Re: Getting ready for winter!

Please wait on the bathrooms. Teresa said a boy scout group is coming in Dec. and we shut down the east bathroom, not the west.

The moles are taking over the area behind the house. Any ideas?

Getting ready for winter!

Ken or Bob,

Will one of you take down the flags in Elkhorn?

Shut down the west bathroom in cabins?

Has anyone called to have the Porta-Pottys picked up?

November 2010: Volunteer and Green Team To Do List!

Here is a working list of volunteer opportunities and TO DO LIST!

  • For now the raking  leaves is good, but we have some garden work too when it is not too wet, and building small box stands to set plants on in the loft (the ones we had burned up).

  • We are getting a large magnet (Bob Zaruba) to get the metal out of the barn area dirt and then we need to rake it up good,

  • Dividing bulbs, cleaning up the butterfly garden, etc. …Grass seeding too.

  • Library needs purging, we started with students and it is a good project for them. We need boxes for this one. We would like to have the Win Redding Mary and Saints Memorial Library back to the Pro Sanctity Center! So we are preparing for the return! We could possibly have a room in the building dedicated to children books for holiness, and in the house Mary and the Saints books for adults!

  • Washing the walls in the house, so that the adults can paint the big room and the upstairs room…. Actually as soon as tomorrow, we can  wash walls tomorrow if it rains. Jeff Norris plans to paint the walls and re-do the floor in the big room starting Monday.

  • Newsletter folding and preparing to mail will be after school next Thursday and if it is delayed, Saturday morning…we hope!

  • Thanks to Bob, the last details of the new shed are finished and Jeff Norris painted it. We will need some final touches, shelves put in and electricity. The rain today proved that it needs a set of stairs up into the shed. “Mud-city!”

  • Lighting!!  Lights around the house are out and we probably need to get some of those sun energy lights for around the big space where the barn was. It is wet and muddy now and if someone should walk out there by mistake, it is dark and dangerous without flashlights or a lighted way. Also out in front of the house where we dug a line for electricity to the shed…well the cat got stuck in the window well and I went to save her and fell in the mud!! No light, no see holes!

  • Other??

Love, Teresa

fire update October 29, 2010

Hi everyone, wanted you to know the update on the property and water situation. It is all still a little precarious. We are still in “emergency mode”. We never leave the property alone; there is always one of us here because it is still too dangerous. The men have not finished clearing off the rubble from the burn site, it will be a few more work days next week. This is not work that volunteers can do.

In regards to Saturday Clean up Day and our water situation: We have leaking joints which may mean that when the plumber comes on Saturday; the joints may have to be fixed before we can get the whole system going and they have dry and harden first. Anyway, for your consolation and personal comfort two porta-potties have been ordered for today and tomorrow.

We have bottled water too.

Cleaning will be difficult if it requires water! We can do a little arranging and sweeping in the cabin for the upcoming groups, but…that is about it unless things change and since they change every 24 hours, who knows it may be all back in working order by the time you come. I will write again tonight to update you.

St. Florien is the patron of fire fighters, and used one single bucket to put out a fire in a whole town. Now I know why only one bucket… he had water problems too. The Lord gives exactly what you need when you need it!

Blessings! Teresa

Fire Fighters left but Larry and the Green Team are on the job!! Thank you!!

To do - tell friends

Hi everyone!

It was a sad day when our beloved barn burned down! We are not however defeated but filled with hope and plans for a new beginning. We cannot waste time either for soon the snow will fly!! What we need to do is this Saturday:

Tell friends, join the green team…

1. Cleanup after the big crew cleans up. There may some things like glass and wire left, so raking will be in order.

2. Finish the storage shed behind the house.

3. Find a place for a washer and dryer in the house!

4. Clean up cabin for retreats in November - Sacred heart on Nov 7th.

5. Prepare "to do" list for house for example: sand and refinish big room floor, paint walls, upstairs and down, fix screens, fix blinds on deck loft window, find a way to keep dog and cat happy and WARM during winter, fix kitchen leak I ceiling, AGAIN!...cracks in cement at kitchen door, check for drafts up and down.....

6. Please fill in what I forgot or what you think most important…

Ok that is enough for now. Let us pray and dream for our future! What Jesus, so do we!

Love and prayers, Teresa

We had an amazing weekend at the Retreat Center! 60 kids, 2 confirmation retreats, and a troop of boy scouts and dads!

Together they:

Moved the round picnic tables into the barn
Brought in the crosses from the stations
Painted the observation deck by the butterfly garden
Moved, cleaned and painted 4 filing cabinets (thank you Mary for the paint)
Unwrapped 3,000 bracelets for the vocation rally
Picked up sticks and branches in the angel woods and the hill
Swept the barn hallway
Picked one tomato!

We are grateful for all of our volunteers!

Summary of Green Team Meeting – September 4, 2010

1-Cut/Trim the cottonwood tree near the cabin – The team undecided about what to do.  Either leave as is and benefit from shade or cut back both remaining main limbs and hope that tree will “bush” out.

2-Asphalt road repair – Inspection shows that an armor coat of adhesive and crushed rock may be all that is needed to get several more years of service before  implementing the estimated $35,000 overlay work.
Action – Get cost estimate for armor coating.
Teresa is concerned about the cement that is coming up by the house being a safety issue. Will someone take a look at that?

3-House window repairs – Leonard will check to see if Oblates qualify for federal grant for weatherproofing the house.

4-House kitchen roof leak – Remains a problem since the former porch area may be settling away from the house.
Action – Leonard/Ken locate wet spot in attic and place bucket below drip for interim solution.

5-Plastic Dam in Angel Woods – some remnants (boards and mud) need to be removed.
Action – Bob Z will clean this up.

6-Paint interior rooms of house - .
Action – Joan will get paint, notify team of which room(s) to do first and set date.
Joan will work with Teresa on date.

7-Refinish Big Room Floor –
Action – Ken will contact person who did previously (Mr. Soutter?) and determine if he will oversee the work, maybe provide tools, but not actually do the project.
We should also ask Jeff

8-Install new pads on chairs in big room –
Action – Joan/Ann/Ken/Mike will locate the supply of new pads stored in barn so we can install at next Green Team meeting.
Did not look for supplies yet!

9-Sort Barn Decorations –
Action – Oblates move art stored in barn to better environment in the house.  Ken and Oblates will make winter project out of labeling tubs and sorting decorations to barn loft.

10-Excess tank and light poles –
Action-Bob will move tank to east end of property and put For Sale sign on it visible from highway.  ($150?).  Also move excess light poles to entrance to property and put For Sale sign on them.  ($50 ea?)

11-Hayrack Wagon – Repairs/Paint completed
Action – Ann contact John Deere dealer to donate/mount 4 – 14 inch tires.  Walker Tire or Marion Tires may also be a possibility.  Ann contact Brother Mel for straw hay bales.
 Thank you Bob!

12-Repaint cabin deck – Paint and texture additive are on site.
Action – Joan will coordinate a Paint Day for 17 September.
This has not been confirmed. It depends when a few people can come help, but the goal is to do it this month!

13-Septic tank – New manhole cover installed.  Old one discarded.
Action – Paint new cover and install flag or pole in hole in center.

14-Barn Gutters – Ongoing maintenance.  Leonard has done some.
Action – Clean out gutters, caulk joints as time allows.

15-Weed Patrol – Thistles, poison ivy, wild cucumber vines are present.
Action – weed and grass killer has been purchased.  Ken will administer.  Anyone can pull up the vines and thistles.
I put the weed killer and poision ivy spray in the saw stall in the cabinet. Leonard found a lot of poision ivy by the creek that needs to be sprayed.

16-Large equipment – Bob Z will make his Pickup truck available as much as possible.  Call him at 238-2658 and he can drop it off for a week at a time for property maintenance.
Action – put out the word that we can use a donated truck, four wheeler, a trailer that mower can pull around.

17-Burn Pile – Burn date is Wednesday September 8.
Action – Bob, Ken, Joan et. al.

18-New picnic table – needs new table top
Action – Bob Z will locate wood and install the new top.

19-Barn kitchen lock – need to replace the combination lock on barn kitchen.

20-Barn kitchen oven – bottom of stove has rusted through.   Add new stove to wish list.
Do we have a current wish list for the center?

21-Barn bathroom –
Action – Leonard will install storm door on bathroom.  Need to keep doors ajar so are moves through the room and avoids musty mold.

22-Barn kitchen water leaks – Larry is fixing one.  There may be another at water heater?

23-Compost pile – Coordinate a compost pile with Leela.  Perhaps start one near garden or creek.  A simple porous fence or container may suffice.

24-Nature preserve Designation – Last month we discussed the possibility of having property designated as nature preserve.  Suggest that we become aware of any costly requirements or other items that we lose control over.

25-Diseased trees – some of the long needle pine trees have dead limbs.
Action-remove dead limbs in the hope of saving the trees.

26-Trim up trees south of barn.

Thank you Green Team! You are St. Joseph's gift to us Oblates!

strange leak and notes

Larry found that the strange leak on the east side shower was a pinhole in a pipe…been there for some time, we just did not notice it. He also said that there was humidity in the cabin and we found a few chairs filled with it. Could it be that the mattresses are too?? We also have to keep the extra beds in some place other than the mechanical room. It is a safety hazard and it also impedes the use of the room as a shelter.

The fan on the east side bathroom of cabin went out and the fan on the west side of the bathroom in the cabin is also wearing out. We need to change them this fall.

Thanks Larry!

I heard and I saw the results that Bob and Renee came out to take down the duck tape mud fence! Thank you! Thanks too for the work on the sewer cover! God bless you!

Next Saturday would be a good work day if anyone wants to come out! The following Saturday there are two groups.

Leonard on the notes: Green Team meeting notes

In addition:

#6  watered the roof of the house and "think' I found and corrected the problem.  thinking of getting into the attic and placing a bucket to catch the leak since it ALWAYS comes thru the same place.

#12  hayrack  The plywood looks pretty bad but I crawled underneath.  The planks look fairly good, maybe a weak spot here or there. removing the plywood will help save the planks.

#14 Septic tank lid   we can cast a new one, fixing would be hard. DONE

New item  The gas pipe attached to the propane tank has been jerked and there is a kink near the tank connection.  Bending or straightening the pipe will likely cause a crack.  There is no leak now.  I shut the gas off at the tank and will bring a flaring tool and connector next trip.

Lets consider taking down the rain gutters on the west  of the house and south of the garage.  because of the pavement they are not really needed except to be cleaned.

Going flying,  bye.

Leak in shower plus party

Please note!

I just found a strange leak in the east side handicap shower. It has been spraying out for awhile. There is mold starting too. I turned the water of to that area, if someone could look at it that would be great!

Thanks, Teresa

Our hearts in fact are drawn into gratitude for the wonders of this spring. Our God is an AWESOME GOD! Blessings, Teresa

Gardening - a passage to ponder

Evangelium Vitae, Pope John Paul II wrote:
“As one called to till and look after the garden of the world (cf. Gen 2:15), man has a specific responsibility towards the environment in which he lives, towards the creation which God has put at the service of his personal dignity. It is the ecological question – ranging from the preservation of the natural habitats of the different species of animals and other forms to “human ecology” properly speaking – which one finds in the Bible a clear and strong ethical direction leading to a solution which respects the great good of life, of every life….When it comes to the natural world, we are subject not only to biological laws but also to moral ones, which cannot be violated with impunity” (42).

Green Team Meeting Canceled, but not the work for May 29-30

Jessi Kary announces: I am officially canceling the meeting! Too many people cannot attend, so please come for camp clean up day and we can touch base via the blog. I'll mostly be at camp now, so let me know when you can come to help and I'll have something ready for you!

Teresa Monaghen wrote:
I will be with you all in Spirit!! See if anyone would like to adopt the angel woods west garden and trim the trees above it too. Also there is that one tree that is hanging over the large pine by the tire swing. The Elm needs to be cut away from the pine. thanks!

FROM LEONARD: I wont make it, still in Canada. You know, they all talk like Red Green.
We passed through Edmonton today so we are finally out of the mountain and into some flatland farming, tractors on the road and everything!!!! I am planning on being at the center next Saturday, 1st Saturday on the month with tool box. Save me something to do. Joan, were you successful getting overhead images of the center?? Mulch the trees on the south side of the creek, please. In my prayers....

From Ken Ramold: I won't be able to make it to the meeting. Lisa is taking me out for my birthday. Here's a list of a few things I know of that still need to be worked on (Oh, Leonard!):

-water fountain in cabin
-new showerheads on east side of cabin (excluding wheelchair shower)- stems are cracked. The new ones are located in
storage room.
-sink holes need to be filled
-drain pipe under entrance way has some erosion on north side
-clean out gutters of house and barn

Sorry I can't be there. Let me know when the next meeting is. Hey, Leonard, what slang are Canadians using these days? Are they still saying, "Beauty, eh"? God bless.
